Your turn to play budget director: what should the government pay for, what should you?
In New York City the budget situation has deteriorated to the point that, starting in July of 2011, the fire department will begin charging motorists for responding to accidents using a tiered system of fees depending on how bad the accident is.  Your car’s on fire—that’ll be $415 to the NYFD; an accident without injuries--$365; an accident with injuries, $490.  This is a trend that is showing up in more cities, counties and states as local governments grapple with a lousy economy and depressed budget projections for the third straight year.  Here in California choices might soon be coming before voters on whether we want or taxes raised or services cut, and which services should be prioritized and which should be first on the chopping block.  So it’s your turn to play finance director of a local municipality and you have to decide what costs will be covered by the government and what costs will be shifted to private individuals—what say you, Mr. or Mrs. Finance Director?

The taxman is just around the corner – preparing for your 2010 W2

Not to spoil your holidays or anything, but it IS almost year’s end, when Santa leaves and the taxman shows up.  From the still unresolved tax cut situation in Washington D.C. to the possibility of new taxes on the horizon in California, it’s a rough time to be a taxpayer.  There are also the simple questions about making year-end contributions to your IRA account that could help your tax obligations, or making year-end charitable donations that will help the needy and could lighten your tax bill.  Our tax expert takes your questions about financial things you still have time to fix as we wrap up 2010 and get ready for 2011.
