$2.5 MILLION in federal GRANTs approved to ENHANCE SHERIFF’S DNA analysis and reduce backlog on sex ASSAULT kits
LOS ANGELES COUNTY – The Board of Supervisors approved $2.5 million in grant funding from the U.S. Department of Justice to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for its “Forensic DNA Backlog Reduction Program’ announced Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich.
$1.5 million will be used to improve the Department’s DNA Program by reducing forensic DNA backlog, improving the capacity for DNA analysis and crime lab infrastructure.
One million dollars will be used by the Sheriff’s Department to hire two additional criminalists who will be directly engaged in processing DNA evidence from sexual assaults. New laboratory equipment will be purchased and a consultant will be hired to develop a new software program.
An additional grant award of $164,000 from the Department of Justice was approved to help identify missing persons through identification of human remains utilizing DNA technology.
