How will healthcare reform affect L.A.? Not much….

The healthcare reform legislation remains the great unknown, as the very first measures are implemented and doctors, patients and insurance companies all adjust to the new realities.  Here in L.A. academics and city officials took a look at the potential impacts of healthcare reform to the city’s residents as part of the “State of the City” report and there should be some undeniably positive changes:  1.9 million residents will become eligible for new health insurance options, which is never a bad thing.  But arguably the biggest challenge to the healthcare system in L.A., paying for the medical services of uninsured illegal immigrants, remains unaddressed because the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act prohibits them from receiving subsidized services.  Two of the most vexing public policy issues, healthcare and immigration, clash here in L.A. as we take our best stab at predicting the future.

Seeking Happily Ever After - truth and the single woman

Census figures tell us there are more single women in the U.S. than ever before and, for the first time, more women are without a spouse than with one. These women are often characterized as desperate husband hunters or career-driven automatons with no time for love or family. A new documentary says, eh, that’s not necessarily the case. Michelle Love took her camera and microphone to the streets of Boston and talked to singles about being unmarried – and received some surprising answers. Are you a single woman who’s asked herself why the Cinderella fairytale hasn’t worked out, while you’re being pressured by parents and friends to tie the knot? Well, you’re not alone – the truth about being single and female.

Guest:

Michelle Cove, director of the documentary, Seeking Happily Ever After, and author of the book of the same name.

TitleWave: Philip Roth’s Nemesis

Polio wasn’t always the petulant paralytic disease that struck fear into the hearts of parents and children that it was during the middle of the 20th century – for years, people would catch a mild case of the disease and develop immunity to it. As sanitation began to improve our exposure and thus resistance to bacteria decreased. It is at this time in our nation’s history that Philip Roth’s latest book, Nemesis takes place. In the book a neighborhood in Newark, New Jersey is stricken with a polio outbreak. Though polio may feel like a disease of the past it isn’t hard to draw parallels between our modern day super bugs such as MRSA and other deadly strains of Staph and how we may soon be changing our daily behavior in an effort to keep the doctor away. From Goodbye, Columbus to Portnoy’s Complaint and now the Nemesis also known as polio – Patt talks with acclaimed author Phillip Roth.
