Props 20 and 27 – a fork in the road – which way to better representation?
Two initiatives with polar opposite purposes – propositions 20 and 27 – will define the path for this decade’s remapping of state and congressional districts. If 20 is passed by the voters, a citizen commission will draw not only the state legislative districts, but also the congressional district boundaries. Prop 27 calls for the elimination of this commission and would return the job of drawing all political districts to the Legislature and the governor. Charges of economic segregation on one side and political protectionism on the other fuel a rancorous argument over the benefits of both plans. Good government either way? It remains to be seen.

Arianna Huffington and a Third World
According to the most recent release by the Bureau of Labor Statistics 9.6% of Americans are unemployed. In late 2009, the U.S. Department of Agriculture revealed that 49 million Americans lack consistent access to food. Last month the U.S. Census Bureau released its poverty numbers and apparently 14.3 % of American’s are living at or below the poverty line (those numbers are still determined by a measure created in the 1960’s).
