Props 20 and 27 – a fork in the road – which way to better representation?

Two initiatives with polar opposite purposes – propositions 20 and 27 – will define the path for this decade’s remapping of state and congressional districts. If 20 is passed by the voters, a citizen commission will draw not only the state legislative districts, but also the congressional district boundaries. Prop 27 calls for the elimination of this commission and would return the job of drawing all political districts to the Legislature and the governor. Charges of economic segregation on one side and political protectionism on the other fuel a rancorous argument over the benefits of both plans. Good government either way? It remains to be seen.

Pimp my auto industry: the story behind bailing out America’s car companies

It has been said that when the President asks you to serve, you serve. So, what about when the President’s incoming Secretary of the Treasury asks you to leave your lucrative career and join the effort to restructure the deteriorating Detroit auto industry? Steven Rattner did it. Who is Steven Rattner? Well, you are more likely to be familiar with his informal moniker – Car Czar. Rattner is credited with leading the team that headed what many consider to be the most successful bailout of the Obama administration. How did Chrysler and GM restructure and why choose a man with no auto-industry knowledge? Rattner joins Patt to give an insider account from under the hood of America’s emergency rescue of the auto industry.

Steven Rattner, former Obama Administration “Car Czar” and author of, “Overhaul: an insider’s account of the Obama administration’s emergency rescue of the auto industry

Arianna Huffington and a Third World America

According to the most recent release by the Bureau of Labor Statistics 9.6% of Americans are unemployed. In late 2009, the U.S. Department of Agriculture revealed that 49 million Americans lack consistent access to food. Last month the U.S. Census Bureau released its poverty numbers and apparently 14.3 % of American’s are living at or below the poverty line (those numbers are still determined by a measure created in the 1960’s). Is it hyperbolic to even ponder the idea that America is driving down a crumbling road toward becoming a third world nation?
