Is LAPD Ready to Shed Consent Decree?

Since 2001, after the Rodney King and the Rampart division corruption cases exposed a pattern of police misconduct, the U.S. Justice Department has governed the policies of the LAPD under a consent decree. Eight years later, the LAPD will ask a federal judge to free the department from the consent decree on Monday. Is it time for the consent decree to lapse, or is more reform still needed?

Guests:

Gerald Chaleff: Police administrator for the LAPD and Commanding Officer of the Consent Decree Bureau

Mark Rosenbaum: Legal Director of the Southern California ACLU. He doesn’t believe that the consent decree should be lifted

1:43 - 1:55

Is LAPD Ready to Shed Consent Decree?, CONT

Christopher Stone: Criminal Justice Professor at Harvard University. He authored a nine-month study of the LAPD that came out in May finding that the "LAPD much changed from eight years ago"

Ian Ayers: Yale economist. He prepared a report for the ACLU last year that found troubling patterns of racial profiling by the LAPD
