MTA BOARD PASSES ANTONOVICH MOTION TO SEND
NEW DRAFT RAILCAR RFP OUT FOR INDUSTRY REVIEW

LOS ANGELES COUNTY – The MTA unanimously passed a motion by Supervisor Antonovich and Director Diane DuBois allowing the MTA Board to follow its time-honored practice of encouraging healthy and open competition by sending a new draft request for proposal (RFP) out for an industry review.

Two weeks ago, Supervisor Antonovich had sent a letter to his fellow MTA Board members, asking for an open bidding process and rejection of the heavily-lobbied $300 million dollar contract with Italian railcar vendor Breda.

In his letter, Antonovich urged the MTA Board to follow the direction of MTA staff who have criticized Breda for failing to deliver under its 2003 contract for 50 cars.  To date, only 25 cars had been delivered – all of which were 6000 pounds overweight, failed certification and have less seat space, leg room and aisle space.
