BOARD APPROVES PLAN TO PROVIDE CONTRACTED OPHTHALMOLOGY AND SURGICAL SERVICES AT MLK-MACC

 

LOS ANGELES – The Board of Supervisors today approved an agreement with the Los Angeles Ophthalmology Medical Group (LAOMG), Inc. to provide services for an Ophthalmology clinic and surgical services at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Multi-Service Ambulatory Care Center.

 

“Under this agreement, LAOMG will provide a full range of outpatient clinical and surgical ophthalmology services, “Supervisor Ridley-Thomas said.

 

The services will include the diagnosis and treatment of cornea and external disease, cataracts, glaucoma, and medical retina disease, as well as the provision of oculoplastic procedures, neuro-ophthalmology, and general ophthalmology.

 

For several years, ophthalmology services were provided by a combination of Charles H. Drew University of Medicine and Science faculty members and County physicians, and also through Drew supplemental agreements and County agreements.

 

The County’s Chief Executive Office found that services can be performed more economically by an independent contractor at an estimated three year cost of $9,568,740, effective May 1, 2010 through April 30, 2013.

 

The services will be provided in the sub-specialty ophthalmology clinic, with the contractor providing an office administrator, who will be responsible for managing the daily operations of the clinic.
