Glendale resident Pauline McCourtney honored in recognition of her 100th birthday.

 

Action requests establishment of state enterprise zones in Walnut Park, Florence-Firestone, Willowbrook, Rancho Dominguez and portions of the Santa Clarita Valley in effort to stimulate economic growth.   (Items 1-D, 2-D, 2, and 8) APPROVED

 

$195,000 proposal would fund video surveillance cameras/equipment at six county housing developments to provide extra security.  (Item 2-H) APPROVED

 

$300,000 plan would fund improvements at Mary Van Dyke Park in South El Monte.  (Item 1-P) APPROVED

 

Proposal calls for reallocating $6.7 million in funds earmarked for canceled Yvonne B. Burke driving range project to Baldwin Hills Regional Conservation Authority.  (Item 2-P) APPROVED

 

Proposal would seek legislation to amend government code that requires public defender candidates to be a practicing attorney in all of the courts of the state for at least one year preceding appointment or election.  (Item 4, cont. from 8/3)  APPROVED AS AMENDED BY ANTONOVICH THAT CHANGES IN LAW NOT APPLY TO CURRENT RECRUITMENT PROCESS

 

Motion calls for report in 60 days on recommendations for policies, procedures and timelines for completion of the 2011 redistricting process.  (Item 5) APPROVED

 

Supervisors Gloria Molina and Michael D. Antonovich request that a review of the Children’s Special Investigations Unit be included as part of the independent audit of the Department of Children and Family Services.  (Item 6) APPROVED 3-2, WITH MOLINA AND RIDLEY-THOMAS OPPOSED, AS AMENDED BY YAROSLAVSKY TO ALLOW HIRING OF ASSISTANT LEAD ATTORNEY

 

Extension of $25,000 reward recommended for information leading to arrest and conviction of person(s) responsible for the 1993 murders of Veronica Ultreras and her 3-year-old daughter, Cynthia, in the Highland Park area.  (Item 7) APPROVED

 

Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas asks that application be submitted for federal grant to fund regional planning efforts along transportation corridors.  (Item 9) APPROVED

 

Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky requests names and salary information of all department heads be posted on County website within two weeks.  (Item 10) APPROVED

 

Action would appoint seven candidates to the board of directors of the new private, non-profit Martin Luther King, Jr. Hospital.  (Item 19) APPROVED

 

$9.2 million increase for LAC+USC Medical Center computer system proposed to enhance medical safety.  (Item 24) CONT. TO 8/17 BY PARKS AND RECREATION

 

Revised $11 million proposal would fund gym and community building at Stephen Sorensen County Park in Palmdale, and set Sept. 27 for bid opening; plan includes provision to acquire and protect 5.4 acres of Mojave ground squirrel replacement habitat.  (Item 27) APPROVED

 

$1.6 million contract proposed for food services at Challenger Memorial Youth Center. (Item 31)  APPROVED, WITH AMENDMENT BY RIDLEY-THOMAS TO REPORT ON COST OF INDIVIDUAL MEALS AT PROBATION HALLS AND CAMPS, AND DEVELOP PLAN TO IMMEDIATELY CORRECT VIOLATIONS OF STATE NUTRITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

 

$2.6 million proposal would purchase video camera/transmission equipment for Sheriff’s Department to provide real-time aerial images of unfolding tactical situations to command staff on the ground to enhance decision-making and response capabilities.  (Item 36) APPROVED

 

$198,000 settlement, plus assumption of $24,756 Medi-Cal lien, proposed for Ana Jimenez-Salgado concerning medical negligence lawsuit arising from treatment received while a patient at LAC+USC Medical Center.  (Item 40) APPROVED SETTLEMENT 4-1, WITH MOLINA OPPOSED.  CORRECTIVE ACTION PLAN CONT. TO 8/24

 

Board asked to approve solar project to produce electricity for the High Desert campus in Lancaster and installation of solar panel roof systems on nine County facilities, to be funded through the issuance of $39 million in bonds. (Item 48)  APPROVED

 

Outreach and education plan proposed to increase turnout in 2010 General Election, including encouraging residents to register as “permanent vote by mail” voters.  (Item 49-B)  APPROVED

 

Approval sought of contract with Office of Independent Review to include oversight of the Probation Department and to perform an assessment in the Department of Children and Family Services.  (Item 49-C)  APPROVED

 

County Counsel asked to report in one week if Sheriff’s documents relating to death of journalist Ruben Salazar are public record, and costs of providing the documents if they can be released.  (Motion introduced at meeting.) APPROVED

 

Study of water in County facilities requested to determine quality and to identify trends and changes in level of contaminants from 10 years ago. (Motion introduced at meeting.)  APPROVED

 

Supervisors meet in closed session to discuss findings of the quality assurance reviews related to the provision of care at the Olive View-UCLA Medical Center’s neonatal intensive care unit.
