BEACHES AND HARBORS IMMEDIATELY CLOSES

TWO SOUTH JETTY VIEW PIERS

MARINA DEL REY, CALIF. – August 20, 2010 – The Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors announced today it has immediately closed two south jetty view piers that are unsafe for public use at this time.  Access to the south jetty and 62nd Street Bridge will remain open for pedestrians and fishing.  Alternative fishing locations are available at Burton Chace Park and the north jetty.

The temporary closure is due to excessive corrosion and fatigue of the main support girders which secure the entire decking platform.  Review of the options for temporary repair is underway, followed by plans for permanent repair or replacement.

During the repairs, no access to the south jetty view piers will be available to visitors.  Notification of the reopening of the view piers will be announced when the view piers are deemed safe for public use.
