DANCE AND MUSIC OF THE PHILIPPINES AT

BIG!WORLD!FUN! FAMILY SHOW AT FORD AMPHITHEATRE

 AUGUST 14 AT 10:00 A.M.

Children admitted FREE to one-hour programs for families.

Learn how to make dancing figure puppets before the show.

Dance is a family matter for the Philippine company, Kayamanan Ng Lahi. Folk dances are passed down to the next generation like stories or mementos and some of Kayamanan’s youngest members make their stage debuts at the family performance at the Ford at 10 a.m., Saturday, August 14. Dance and live music demonstrate the deeply-rooted, living culture of the Philippine islands. Company members will teach the audience to perform Philippine martial arts movements at their seats.

Kids and parents can create dancing figure puppets and ribbon streamers during pre-show activities led by staff from the Autry National Center beginning at 9:00 a.m.

The hour-long Big!World!Fun! performances in the shaded outdoor amphitheatre are designed for the enjoyment of children ages 4 to 10, parents and grandparents. The series is presented by the Ford Theatre Foundation. Booklists related to each series event, provided by the Los Angeles County Library, are available at www.FordTheatres.org; click on “Family” under “Events” on the homepage, then click on “More Info” for the event that interests you.

Admission to all events is FREE for children and $5 for adults. Parking is $1 per vehicle. To reserve/purchase tickets, call the Ford box office at 323 461-3673 or visit www.FordTheatres.org.

Kayamanan, under the leadership of Joel Jacinto, Barbara Ele and Ave Jacinto, celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. The company’s artistic approach is based on anthropological research, resulting in a strong and appropriate translation of traditional Philippine dance and music to the stage. Noted for its extensive dance repertoire, costumes and music ensembles. Kayamanan has received numerous accolades including L.A. Times' description of one of the group's concerts as " ...consistently exciting and a triumph of enlightened cultural preservation." In the Southern California performing arts scene, the group is highly active and has been consistently programmed by numerous museums (Getty, Fowler UCLA, Armand Hammer, Pacific Asia and Southwest) and mainstream arts presenters, including Fil-Am Arts (Festival of Philippine Arts & Culture), Grand Performances, International Festival of Masks and others.

Big!World!Fun! continues with Boxtales Theatre Company’s production of the Indian fable “Prince Rama and the Monkey King” (August 21); and an opportunity to sing along with LA Opera’s artists in “Sing Out Loud!” (August 28).

The Big!World!Fun! Family Series is sponsored by Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, Kenneth T. and Eileen L. Norris Foundation, City of Los Angeles 4th District Councilmember Tom LaBonge, Sony Pictures Entertainment and ABC7. The Autry National Center and The Los Angeles County Library are series partners.
