Inspired by “National Donut Day,” Operation READ teachers engaged students in a research and literacy activity that ultimately led to a donut-creating contest where youth were challenged to create an amazing donut, name it, and describe the ingredients as well as give the inspiration for its creation.
A winning donut has been chosen by Supervisor Antonovich and will be announced on Friday by Chief Blevins. The winner wins free tickets to Magic Mountain and will have his/her winning donut baked by a local donut store owner. Free samples of the winning donut will be provided for all in attendance—MEDIA PERSONNEL INCLUDED.
Operation READ is an award-winning program aimed at building reading comprehension, writing, and grammar skills for incarcerated youth in Los Angeles County’s Probation facilities. Last year, Operation READ’s academic mentors provided almost 3,000 youth with 78,600 hours of tutoring.
