LIST OF WRITE-IN CANDIDATES FOR THE NOVEMBER 4, 2008

 PRESIDENTIAL GENERAL ELECTION

Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk Dean Logan today announced the final list of write-in candidates who have qualified for the November 4, 2008 Presidential General Election in Los Angeles County.

There are 16 write-in candidates who have qualified in seven contests for the November 4th General Election ballot.  (List attached)  Write-in candidates are not printed on the ballot. The names of the qualified write-in candidates will be available at each of the 4,394 polling places on Election Day.

Only votes for write-in candidates who have qualified and who are listed will be counted.  Voters may ask a precinct board member for a list of these candidates.  To cast a vote for a qualified write-in candidate, voters must write the name of the candidate and the office title in the space provided on the long stub portion of their ballot card or on the write-in ballot sleeve for vote by mail ballots.

When a voter chooses to vote for a write-in candidate whose name is not printed on the ballot, that ballot cannot be counted on Election Night.  Each ballot containing a write-in vote must be individually reviewed to determine whether or not the write-in vote is for a qualified write-in candidate and whether or not the voter also voted for a candidate on the ballot for the same office.  When an overvote occurs, neither vote can be counted for that one office; although the rest of the ballot selections will be counted.  Due to the individual scrutiny involved, no portion of any ballot containing a write-in vote is counted on Election Night.

Vote tallies for write-in candidates are not available until the conclusion of the Official Canvass, because each ballot containing a write-in vote must be set aside for manual review.  By law, election officials have up to 28 days following the election to complete the Official Canvass and certify the election results.
