Comedy Congress

Nothing produces political comedy like a huge upset campaign victory, and the political gods were smiling upon us this week:  Democrats are dejected, Republicans are rejoicing and healthcare reform is probably dead, but most importantly everyone was in hysterics.  Our motto on Comedy Congress is that just when politics makes you want to cry, it’s usually best to laugh.  Today we laugh at the shrill hysteria of the healthcare debate, the perpetual Sarah Palin tour, maddeningly arrogant CEO’s and more.  Tomorrow we’ll probably cry about our lost jobs, but join us now in laughing at the madness of it all—the truth hurts far less when it’s told by comedians.

Guests:

Greg Fitzsimmons, regular performer on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “Late Show with David Letterman,” and “Late Night with Conan O’Brien”; hosts his own radio show “The Greg Fitzsimmons Show” on XM-Sirius Satellite Radio; and has written & produced numerous TV comedies

Ben Gleib, regular performer at the Hollywood Improv, on the CBS “The Late Late Show,” and on NBC’s “Last Call with Carson Daly”; named one of "Six Comedians who Could be Comedy’s Next Big Thing" in Esquire & a regular panelist on the E! Network’s “Chelsea Lately”

When Brute Force Fails

Crime may be down in Los Angeles, but punishment remains a significant state issue, compounded by Gov. Schwarzenegger’s recent urging to privatize prisons. Nationally, one in every hundred men in the U.S. is incarcerated—the highest number in our history and the highest percentage of any country in the world. What’s at the root of this problem and what’s are the most cost effective means of fixing it? Author Mark Kleiman joins Patt with his book “When Brute Force Fails.”

Guest:

Mark A. R. Kleiman is professor of public policy at the University of California, Los Angeles; he is the author of “When Brute Force Fails,” “Against Excess: Drug Policy for Results” and “Marijuana: Costs of Abuse, Costs of Control”
