Does mom & dad trump dad & dad….or mom & mom?

It is one of the questions at the heart of the Prop 8 debate - Do parents need both a mother and a father? According to a recent study published in the February issue of the Journal of Marriage and Family the gender of parents has little significance in the psychological adjustment and social success of children.  The study concludes that it’s more about the quality of parenting than the gender of the parents—and that gay parents might be even slightly more likely than a heterosexual couple to be committed to hands-on parenting.  But can you completely erase gender from the traditional roles of mothers and fathers?

The case from the plaintiffs: arguing against Prop. 8’s constitutionality

After several defeats at the polls and a few more in the courts, it might have been the best week that the same-sex marriage movement has had in California in quite some time.  The plaintiffs in the federal lawsuit, challenging the constitutionality of the gay-marriage-banning Proposition 8, aggressively attacked the witnesses and logic of the Prop. 8 defense, namely that same-sex marriage undermines traditional marriages between men and women.  The cross examination was highlighted by a tense exchange between plaintiff’s lawyer David Boies and the main witness for the defense about how, exactly, same-sex marriage threatened traditional marriage.  We heard from the defense yesterday and today Patt talks with the plaintiffs as the Prop. 8 trial draws to a close.

You Are Not a Gadget

Is Wikipedia smarter than you?  Does Facebook promote the wisdom of mobs over the intelligence of the individual?  Jaron Lanier, one of the pioneers of Silicon Valley and the father of virtual reality, argues that the Internet has fallen short of its early promise by becoming a place where those doing intellectual work are getting poorer and only advertisements are worth any money.  In “You Are Not a Gadget” he explores how technology interacts with culture and argues for the need for a new humanistic technology.

Guests:

Jaron Lanier is known as the father of virtual reality technology. He’s worked on the interface between computer science and medicine, physics, and neuroscience and is most recently the author of “You Are Not a Gadget: A Manifesto”
