SUPERVISOR RIDLEY-THOMAS SALUTES DORSEY HIGH SCHOOL ENVIRONMENTAL CLUB FOR RECYCLING EFFORTS

LOS ANGELES – Dorsey High School’s environmental club, the Global Warriors, was recognized today by the Supervisor Ridley-Thomas and the Board of Supervisors for its successful campus recycling effort.

The club developed innovative strategies to promote recycling on their campus and in the school’s neighborhood, such as a poster contest; collecting mixed paper, bottles, and cans; and conducting an electronic waste collection event on campus.

“The Global Warriors also provide ongoing service to the community by assisting with tree plantings and neighborhood cleanups,” Supervisor Ridley-Thomas said, referring to a Los Angeles Times article featuring the group in 2009. The article highlighted the services that the club implemented on their campus and throughout the community.

The Global Warriors diverted 14.96 pounds per person of mixed paper, plastic, aluminum, and electronic waste – a total of 28,650 pounds of materials – from landfills.

The students also created an informative video addressing the problems of waste, waste reductions, recycling, and litter on campuses, and are planning a campus garden, which will use a system of collecting and utilizing storm water and rainwater to irrigate the gardens.

“Thank you, Dorsey High School, for your commitment to providing a beautiful and healthy environment for this and future generations,” the Supervisor told the group.
