OPEN

1:30 - 1:58:30

Take a number, please… shorter wait times at your local HMO

If your HMO doctors don’t call you back within a half hour, or see you within a certain number of days – they could be penalized. New regulations from the California Department of Managed Health Care start the clock on how long you have to wait for treatment.  Will this make for a healthier population, or will it stretch your doctor too thin to give proper care?

Guests:

Cindy Ehnes, Director of the California Department of Managed Health Care

CALL HER

Patrick Johnston, CEO and President of the California Association of Health Plans

CALL HIM:

NOT CONFIRMED – DO NOT PROMOTE THIS GUEST

Representative of the California Association of Physician Groups, a professional association comprised of more than 150 of California's physician groups. These groups employ and/or contract with physicians who in turn provide health care services to approximately 13 million Californians.

OR

NOT CONFIRMED – DO NOT PROMOTE THIS GUEST

Representative of California Medical Association

·        CMA originally supported the 2002 law which mandated these regulations be written.

·        Did not support the initial regulations, but has since worked with CA Dept of Managed Health Care and is now “neutral and hopeful.”

·        CMA’s concern is that the HMO’s will not hire enough doctors to meet the increased time demands and will require current doctors to see patients much faster to satisfy the regulations, which will undermine care.

Haiti’s lessons for L.A.: surviving & responding to a killer quake

The 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Haiti, and the resulting devastation, should be a reminder that Southern California is due for its own monster quake.  While the comparisons probably end at the seismological similarities between Haiti and greater Los Angeles, there is still a great potential for mass destruction and ensuing chaos in the wake of an earthquake right here at home.  From coordination among so many agencies—who has the ultimate authority in a devastated post-quake L.A., the mayor, governor or the feds—to rule of law questions—does the National Guard automatically take over—there are monumental issues facing the emergency preparedness plan for Los Angeles.  We attempt to take the lessons learned from Haiti and apply them to our own backyard.
