Obama’s great expectations, round 2: Previewing the SOTU & the coming year

With so many expectations, priorities and promises on President Obama’s first year agenda, he was probably destined to disappoint both his supporters and critics.  Unfortunately for the President his first year could probably be best summed up with disappointments, from a consistently slumping economy to stalled health care reform legislation.  As the President looks to reset his agenda in tonight’s State of the Union address, Patt checks in with interests groups on both sides of the aisle about their expectations, not only for the speech but for the year ahead in policy developments.  On healthcare, job creation and the environment, what are your hopes from the President and Congress?

A bread line might be an upgrade… hunger in America

You can’t spin the numbers. A new Gallup survey reveals that one in five Americans lacked the money to buy food at some point last year, with the numbers rising if you have children. And, a record high 38 million Americans, one in eight, now receive food stamps.  Don’t worry though, to combat this issue the Agriculture Department has chosen to avoid the word “hunger” in exchange for “food insecure,” hoping to dampen the blow that 14.6% of Americans lack consistent access to sufficient food, the highest in the survey’s 14-year history.  We talk about the people behind those numbers around the nation and in our own backyard.

Guests:

James Weill (WHILE), President of the Food Research and Action Center, a nonprofit working to eradicate hunger and under-nutrition in the U.S.  They co-sponsored the Gallup survey.

American Original: The Life and Constitution of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia

Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, known as the Great Dissenter and considered by many to be the leading voice of the Supreme Court’s conservative side, was nominated to the country’s highest court by Ronald Reagan in 1986.  But before that, he carried his rifle on New York’s subway going to and from military drills at a Jesuit high school, defended the power of the Executive Branch in a post-Watergate world, and was called the worst enemy of free speech in America for his rulings on the press and warrantless wiretapping.  Joan Biskupic joins us to talk about her book “American Original,” the story of how Scalia became Scalia.

Guests:

Joan Biskupic has covered the Supreme Court since 1989, as a reporter for The Washington Post, USA Today and PBS’s Washington Week; she is also the author of “American Original: The Life and Constitution of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia” and “Sandra Day O’Connr: How the First Woman on the Supreme Court Became Its Most Influential Justice”
