ASSISTANT PUBLIC DEFENDER PETERS HONORED
Los Angeles County Assistant Public Defender Winston Peters will receive the Pacific Juvenile Defender of the Year award Friday, Nov. 7 in San Francisco during the 2008 Juvenile Justice Roundtable.
The roundtable is sponsored by the San Francisco County Public Defender and the Pacific Juvenile Defender Center.
Peters, 51, has been with the Public Defender’s Office since 1985 and is responsible for implementing the vision and reforms of Public Defender Michael Judge in the representation of children in the delinquency system.
Considered a national and statewide leader in juvenile justice, Peters serves as the governor’s appointee on the California State Advisory Committee on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, and on the seven-member California delegation to the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation’s Juvenile Indigent Defense Action Network.
He is an advisory board member on the Boalt Hall (U.C. Berkeley) School of Law’s Juvenile Justice Policymaker Education Project and chair of the Juvenile Justice Subcommittee of the statewide California Public Defenders Association.
In 2004-06, Peters was a member of the Governor’s Juvenile Justice Workgroup and was chair of the State Commission on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention in 2003.
