GLORIA MOLINA ANNOUNCES I-105 CORRIDOR
TRAFFIC SIGNAL SYNCHRONIZATION PROJECT

Santa Fe Springs, South Gate, Downey, La Mirada, Norwalk Affected

LOS ANGELES (December 9, 2008)—Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina announced that plans were approved at today’s Board of Supervisors meeting to move forward on a traffic signal synchronization project along the Interstate-105 corridor in Santa Fe Springs, South Gate, Downey, La Mirada, and Norwalk.

“As Los Angeles County’s population continues to grow, road congestion does, too,” Molina said.  “So it’s important for us to do what we can to help.  By improving the flow of vehicles on our roads and alerting drivers to upcoming accidents on their commute, signal synchronization projects like this one will help motorists reduce their commuting times.”

As part of the I-105 traffic signal synchronization project, the county will use a traffic management strategy known as Intelligent Transportation Systems, which is based on the understanding that traditional methods of reducing traffic congestion—such as new street construction and widening—are not always feasible or even desirable.  Projects utilizing the Intelligent Transportation Systems philosophy instead take advantage of a wide range of advanced technology to improve roadway congestion.  For instance, it could include viewing intersection operations from a remote location and using this data to better monitor traffic signal operations.  Another example: motorists may be alerted to upcoming traffic conditions and alternate travel choices via changeable message signs.

The I-105 traffic corridor traffic signal synchronization project is expected to cost up to $2.4 million.  Work should take 180 days.  Currently, it is scheduled to start in April 2009 and should be completed in January 2010.

As a result of today’s board action, the county is requesting bids for the modification and synchronization of traffic signals that include installation of fiber optic equipment and closed-circuit television cameras, as well as other pertinent work.  Bids must be submitted to the Department of Public Works’ Cashier’s Office located at 900 South Fremont Avenue (Mezzanine Level), Alhambra, California, 91803-1331 before 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 6, 2009.  Prebid questions should be directed to Mr. Harry Cong at (626) 458-3111.
