LOS ANGELES COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT SUPPORTS HOMELESS WOMEN AND THEIR FAMILIES DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON
Today in the Kenneth Hahn Auditorium at the Century Regional Detention Facility, Lynwood, Sheriff Baca, members of the Community Transition Unit, Newman’s Own Foundation, and Shelter Partnership, Inc. pooled their resources to support formerly incarcerated women and their families, who are either homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, during the holiday season.
The Community Transition Unit was created in 2001 through the visionary leadership of Sheriff Baca. The unit assists incarcerated individuals successfully reintegrate into the community following their release. By establishing partnerships between correctional staff, the public and private community-based organizations and programs, the Sheriff’s Community Transition Unit works to reduce the likelihood of recidivism. Homelessness, substance abuse and the lack of suitable employment opportunities are major factors determining whether a former jail inmate will re-offend and return to jail. Innovative programs as this help address each of these stumbling blocks.
The Newman’s Own Foundation donates all profits and royalties from “Newman’s Own” products for educational and charitable purposes. The Newman’s Own Foundation has given more than $250 million to thousands of charities since 1982.
Shelter Partnership, Inc., is dedicated to alleviating, preventing and ending homelessness by assisting in the development of short-term and transitional housing programs, affordable housing, and supportive services for the homeless and potentially homeless throughout
Los Angeles County.
Through the collaborative efforts of these groups, 70 formerly incarcerated women will receive gift baskets and toys for their children over the next three days. Lunch will be provided by the Sheriff’s Food Services Unit, which also offers culinary arts training and certification to inmates during their incarceration.
