MOLINA JOINS HEAL THE BAY’S ‘DAY WITHOUT A BAG’ TO GREEN HOLIDAYS

LOS ANGELES, (December 18, 2008) – Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina joined Heal the Bay’s second annual “A Day Without a Bag” with help from her staff who handed  out reusable bags at different locations throughout the County’s First District today at:

·         Centro Maravilla, East L.A.

·         East Los Angeles County Hall

·         El Super at Gateway Shopping Center, Santa Fe Springs

·         El Super, Florence-Firestone

·         Food for Less, El Monte

·         Los Nietos Community Center, West Whittier

·         Pomona Central Library at City Hall Campus

·         Ralph’s, Downtown L.A.

·         Stater Brothers, Valinda / West Covina

·         Target, Rosemead

·         Top Value Market, East L.A.

·         Whittier Boulevard at Atlantic Shopping, East L.A.

"We were proud to join Heal the Bay today in promoting reusable bags in place of single use bags," said Molina.  "Today, my staff reached many consumers about the importance of reusable bags and helped Heal the Bay distribute the reusable bags in my district -- from Downtown L.A. to Pomona; and from El Monte to Southeast Los Angeles."

Municipalities and government representatives such as Molina, environmental groups and businesses today urged Southland shoppers to send a gift to the environment during the holiday season by foregoing plastic or paper grocery bags in favor of reusable totes.

California municipalities spend nearly $50 million each year just to collect and dispose of plastic bag waste. Fewer than 5% of plastic grocery bags are recycled each year in
Los Angeles, so the remainder clogs precious landfill, litters public spaces and harms animal life when the bags infiltrate waterways.  (For more information on costs of disposable bags go here)

Municipalities included: Agoura Hills, Arcadia, Avalon, Baldwin Park, Bell Gardens, Bellflower, Beverly Hills, Burbank, Calabasas, Carson, Compton, Covina, Culver City, El Monte, El Segundo, Hermosa Beach, Inglewood, Lomita, Los Angeles County (Supervisor Molina/First District), Long Beach, L.A. Lynwood, Malibu, Manhattan Bch, Norwalk, Redondo Bch, Rolling Hills Estates, Santa Clarita, Santa Fe Springs, Santa Monica, Signal Hill, South El Monte, Walnut and West Hollywood.                                                       –end-
