Local Boxer to Fighting his way through 2008 Olympics in Beijing
Estrada will meet Britain’s James DeGale
Los Angeles, CA – Shawn Estrada of East Los Angeles fought an impressive fight against Argentina's Ezequiel Maderna on Saturday, August 9, 2008. The 10-2 victory in the fourth bout advanced him to the next round against Britain's James DeGale. Back in August the East Los Angeles native earned his spot in the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team by winning a championship in his division at the Olympic Trials in Houston, Texas. He completed the week-long tournament undefeated to take the title at 165 pounds. Estrada has been training at the County of Los Angeles Eddie Heredia Boxing Club for 10 years, since the age of eleven.
After many years of rigorous training at Eddie Heredia Boxing Club and over 200 boxing matches, the Estrada conquered one of his biggest fights: becoming part of the boxing team representing the United States in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Shawn is a graduate of Lynwood High School and attended East Los Angeles College. The third youngest of 15 brothers and sisters wants to be an inspiration for young athletes. Shawn not only wants to continue with his boxing career but he also wants to pursue a degree in business.
Rodrigo Mosquera is the boxing coach at Eddie Heredia Boxing Club and he is extremely proud of Shawn. Mr. Mosquera’s passion of the sport is reflected in the dozens of belts and medals displayed on the walls of the club.
The County of Los Angeles Eddie Heredia Boxing Club is open Monday through Friday from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturdays.
