“999 FOR KIDS”
WHO: SHERIFF LEE BACA, LOS ANGELES COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT, AND DIRECTOR TRISH PLOEHN, LOS ANGELES COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF CHILDREN AND FAMILY SERVICES, WHO WILL PRESENT SEVERAL RECOGNITION AWARDS TO SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT UNITS AND OTHERS WHO GENEROUSLY DONATED OVER $142,784.70 TO THE “999 FOR KIDS” 2008 FUND-RAISING CAMPAIGN (999 IS THE LAW ENFORCEMENT RADIO CODE FOR OFFICER NEEDS EMERGENCY HELP).
WHAT: THE “999 FOR KIDS” PROGRAM, WHICH HAS BEEN IN EXISTENCE SINCE 1985, WAS DEVELOPED TO HELP CHILDREN WHO ARE VICTIMS OF THE MOST SEVERE CASES OF CHILD ABUSE, NEGLECT AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. THE MEDICAL PLACEMENT AND DEAF SERVICES UNITS OF THE DEPARTMENT OF CHILDREN AND FAMILY SERVICES ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CARE OF MORE THAN 1,000 OF THESE CHILDREN. ALTHOUGH TAX DOLLARS PROVIDE FOR THEIR BASIC NEEDS, THERE ARE NO FUNDS AVAILABLE FOR THE SPECIAL NEEDS THAT GO BEYOND THIS BASIC CARE.
THE “999 FOR KIDS” PROGRAM RAISES MONEY FOR THE PURPOSE OF PURCHASING SPECIAL ITEMS AND SERVICES FOR THESE CHILDREN, E.G., SPORTS WHEELCHAIRS, COMPUTERS, SPECIAL EDUCATION CLASSES, MEDICALLY-ORIENTED TOYS AND GAMES, AND A YEARLY CHRISTMAS PARTY.
THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT AND THE DEPARTMENT OF CHILDREN AND FAMILY SERVICES ANNUALLY CONDUCT THREE “999 FOR KIDS” FUND- RAISING EVENTS INCLUDING 999 FOR KIDS CHILD ABUSE AWARENESS PLEDGE DRIVE, 5K/10K RUN SPONSORED BY INDUSTRY STATION, AND DINNER/DANCE SPONSORED BY COURT SERVICES EAST BUREAU.
