Pay as You Drive
Should those who drive less (or better) pay the same amount of auto insurance as every other driver? Insurance companies have come up with a new pricing and fee system based on mileage, speed, acceleration and braking. The only catch is that you would have to install a wireless device that records your driving habits. Thrifty drivers may develop the driving style of little old ladies, but there are more subtle risks to drivers’ privacy. Assemblyman Jared Huffman has introduced a bill to allow for this habit related pricing, and California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner thinks it’s a good idea, but is it worth saving a few bucks to have insurance companies know just how you drive? Who does qualify as a “good” driver?
