Re: Jamiel's Law: This Sunday, Leimert Park

I'll try to make it. What time are you going?

Joe are you going to be in Mexico by then? I could use your camera if you could bring it.  My set up is still not quite complete following the theft of my equipment.

I'll have my phone - cam but haven't figured out how to upload video to a format that can be used on the blog or You Tube yet.

Lets go see what happens!

Jamiel's Law: This Sunday, Leimert Park
By Walter Moore, Candidate for Mayor of Los Angeles, WalterMooreForMayor.com
August 20, 2008

The Shaws will return to Leimert Park this Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to gather signatures for the petition to put Jamiel's Law on the ballot. If you can, please come say "hello" to them and tell them you support them. I'll be there from from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., and I'll bring yard signs and bumper stickers if you'd like to get one. (Leimert Park is located at the intersection of Crenshaw Boulevard and W. Vernon Avenue.)

The "Hour of Power" produced about 653 signatures in 60 minutes. That's not bad for an hour, but to get this on the ballot, I think we're going to need a different strategy. Here are a few steps in that direction:

First of all, I've added a link to the front page of JamielsLaw.com so people can download, sign and return the petition without having to go anywhere. Let's just hope they read the instructions, since only registered voters who live in L.A. can sign.

Second, my wife and I plan to go door-to-door in our neighborhood, where people know us. Depending on your neighborhood and your reputation, you may get better results doing that than approaching apathetic or hostile shoppers at your local supermarket.

Third, a recurring theme from the e-mail I received was that some volunteers had no signs or pictures of any kind identifying them as people gathering signatures. I made a simple, letter-sized sign with a picture of JAS and taped it to the front of my clipboard so it hung down where passers-by could see it. I've added a link to it at the JamielsLaw.com petition download page, or you can click here to download it: clipboard sign.

Some of you have asked when the deadline is for the signatures. The short answer, as is posted at the top of the JamielsLaw.com website, is October 26, 2008.

That, as some of you have observed, explains why Weiss has said he'll promise to hold hearings in October: if we have the signatures, he can pretend to take action and "lead" by urging adoption of Zine's watered-down motion; and if we do not, he will continue to side with illegal alien gang bangers.

The longer answer, however, is that there is no deadline per se. Rather, we must obtain about 74,000 signatures in any 120-day period. As for the October 26, 2008 date, that is 120 days after we first started getting signatures. So if we get 74,000 signatures in that period, we can get it on the ballot. However, all that happens each day after October 26, 2008 is that signatures gathered more than 120 days earlier "expire." So we can keep going after October 26, 2008, but let's try to get it done by then, okay?

Thanks again for your help.
