Why We Hate Us

The land of opportunity has turned into the land of hate, according to Dick Meyer.  In his new book “Why We Hate Us: American Discontent in the New Millennium,” he

examines the reasons Americans have come to resent their country -- from corporations that are supposed to care about you, but don’t; to obnoxiously loud and candid cell phone chatter in the restaurant seat next to you; and that reality show that drives you crazy.  But Meyer thinks these small complaints are indicative of something bigger – “a lack of trust in public leadership and an overall weakening of public morality.”  Has the realm of personal choice turned us into a total consumer society that hates itself?

Strength in Numbers – The Law Works Together

Law enforcement agencies at the local, state, and federal level worked together in two recent sweeps in Los Angeles, culminating in the arrest or indictment of more than 120 gang members. Cooperation among the agencies is a result of recent efforts to share information and join resources to go after gangs and gang-related crime, unlike the past when the police, the FBI, the U.S. Attorney, etc., worked separately with little or no coordination of knowledge or investigations. Does this sea-change in tactics put gangs on the run?  We ask the experts.
