Jamiel's Law Jump-Start This Weekend

Jamiel's Law Jump-Start This Weekend

Here it is, September 17, 2008 -- six months after Jamiel Shaw, II was murdered by an illegal alien gang banger -- and City Hall hasn't lifted a finger to protect your family from the same fate.

Villaraigosa and the City Council want you to forget. They want you to focus on the presidential election, transit tax hikes, and budget gridlock in Sacramento.

Jamiel's teammates, however, will not forget. You see, Jamiel wasn't loved just by his family, but by his teachers, his fellow students, and his football teammates, as well.

These outstanding young men marched silently from L.A. High School to the place where their friend was murdered, to honor his memory. The L.A. Times covered the march -- while omitting to mention that Jamiel was murdered by an illegal alien gang member, and omitting to mention Jamiel's Law.

ESPN has also reported on the epidemic of murdered high school athletes. The Shaw family is trying to stop that epidemic nation-wide. They travelled all the way to Washington, D.C., to testify about what happened to them. However, as Jamiel's aunt, Althea Shaw, has reported, only the Republican members of Congress were willing to meet with them. Nancy Pelosi did not even allow hearings on this important problem.

I know you have too much to do as it is. I do, too. (You would not believe how much time it takes to run for Mayor.)

But let's set an example for Jamiel's teammates and family -- and especially his little brother. Let's show the Shaws and the Bolognas they are not alone.

Let's show them, through our conduct, that their lives matter, we care, and we will neither forget nor settle for anything less than the enactment of Jamiel's Law.

Please make this the weekend that you walk your Jamiel's Law petition around your neighborhood. Take an hour. Take two hours. But knock on your neighbors' doors and give them the opportunity to do the right thing. Most people who find out what Jamiel's Law is wind up supporting it, quickly and enthusiastically.

One more thing: Monday morning, whether you've filled up all the signature lines or not, please mail what you've got to the Shaw Family. Don't wait. You can print out a new form for new signatures at JamielsLaw.com. But let's keep this moving.
