NEWS RELEASE

GOVERNOR SCHWARZENEGGER PROCLAIMS

SEPTEMBER 21-27 AS “EMPLOY OLDER WORKERS WEEK” IN CALIFORNIA

Community and Senior Services/Area Agency on Aging Encourages Employers to Hire Older Workers - Valuable Resource

LOS ANGELES COUNTY—Community and Senior Services (CSS) joins the State of California in recognizing September 21-27, 2008 as “Employ Older Workers Week” in California to highlight the importance of recognizing the talents of this population in keeping California competitive in a rapidly changing global market.

“In addition to honoring the older worker, ‘Employ Older Workers Week’ also acknowledges the many public and private organizations that actively recruit and employ older workers. I encourage employers and community leaders to hire workers from this valuable pool of candidates,” said Schwarzenegger.

“It makes good business sense to hire experienced older workers,” says Cynthia Banks, Director, CSS/Area Agency on Aging.  “Older workers are valued for having a good work ethic and for providing experience, knowledge and dependability in the workplace,” she added.

Retirement patterns are changing among America’s 78 million baby boomers and this trend is expected to result in an unprecedented number of mature workers participating in the workforce in the 21st Century.  According to a U.S. Bureau of Labor report, one in five (20 percent) of all U.S. workers will be 55 or older by 2015. Studies have shown that approximately 80 percent of baby boomers plan on working past age 65.

National “Employ Older Workers Week” has been observed in California since 1959.  It is celebrated annually throughout the nation during the last full week of September.
