Obama and McCain: Two Roads to Health Care Reform

With rising costs, uneven quality of care, and nearly 45 million uninsured Americans, most people agree that a major overhaul of the U.S. health care system is needed.  But Republicans and Democrats are sharply divided on the focus of reform, as evidenced by the differing plans proposed by Obama and McCain.  Patt checks in with advisors from both campaigns on their respective ideas and then gets a reality check from an analyst who finds problems with both proposals.

Steve Parente, health advisor to Jon McCain and associate professor in the Department of Finance in the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota where he specializes  in health economics, health insurance, medical technology evaluation and health information technology.

Are We Safe? A Look Back at 9/11 and Efforts to make America Secure

Since 9/11, Americans have started to feel relatively safe in the homeland. But that complacency masks an ugly truth. Al Qaeda remains active. Several plots against the US have been foiled, but it continues to attack western interests successfully throughout the world. And it is still determined to hit the US again--with nuclear or biological weapons, if possible. A new study from the Partnership for a Secure America, a security think tank led by the former vice chairman of the 9-11 commission, concludes that the US remains dangerously vulnerable to chemical, biological and nuclear attacks. Security experts take a look at this danger--how real is it? Can future attacks be prevented? Or is another serious strike on US soil just a matter of time?

Guests:

Lee Hamilton, former US Congressman (D-IN), vice chairman of the 9/11 Commission, currently serves on the President's Homeland Security Advisory Council, and serves on the board of "Partnership for a Secure America."
