Pop Music Goes to College

Finally, someone is taking popular music seriously. The Norman Lear Center at the University of Southern California is bringing critics, musicians, artists and fans together to study the social and cultural contributions of pop music. Patt talks with artists and scholars involved with The Popular Music Project to talk about a listening party devoted to The Paisley Underground: a genre of music popular in Los Angeles in the 1980’s.

Banned and Burned: The Grapes of Wrath

From the No. 1 spot on the national best seller list to being publicly burned and banned from California schools only a month later, Americans’ reception of John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath revealed a nation in social upheaval. Author Rick Wartman follows the story of the book’s controversy and the subsequent struggle over its censorship in his new book, Obscene in the Extreme: The Burning and Banning of John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath.
