Fun with Redistricting: Slicing and Dicing California’s Congressional Districts
This November, voters will face yet another in a long line of redistricting proposals. Proposition 11 would put congressional map-making in the hands of a 14-member commission, composed of California voters chosen by appointment, rather than legislatures. This version of redistricting reform is sponsored by citizen’s advocacy group Common Cause and backed by Governor Schwarzenegger. Opponents say the new system is confusing and doesn’t guarantee equal representation.

SAG Control Up for Grabs
Hollywood is holding its breath this week, waiting to see who will control the Screen Actors Guild and what that will mean for labor contract negotiations, which have been at a standstill since August. Two factions are fighting it out: MembershipFirst!, the current faction that currently holds a slim majority on the guild’s board and claims to be privately negotiating with employers, and Unite for Strength, the challenger group that claims the management talks have been mismanaged. Which faction wins will crucially impact the stalled talks with the Hollywood studios as well as relations with estranged sister union AFTRA.

Smogged in the City of Angels
To Angelenos, that yellow brown haze that floats above the would-be beautiful landscape of the city is just another fact of life. Most of us don’t know L.A. without it…but it wasn’t always there. In their book “Smogtown,” journalists Chip Jacobs and William J. Kelly take a fresh look at the decades of reaction to this particular air born pollution. They bring us the history of smog in Los Angeles and explain how our attempts to clean-up have molded the modern-day culture of the city.
