ANTONOVICH CALLS FOR INVESTIGATION AND REFORM IN WAKE OF DCFS CHILD DEATH REPORT

LOS ANGELES COUNTY – On Tuesday, the Board of Supervisors will a consider a motion by Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich that directs the County to conduct an investigation into 14 child fatalities from 2008 detailed in recent reports issued by the Department of Children and Family Services.   These deaths came as the result of child abuse or neglect by parents or caregivers.

To protect children from future incidents, Antonovich's motion directs the Chief Executive Officer to work with the Department of Children and Family Services and County Counsel to strengthen court procedures and accountability; share necessary information across all agencies serving families simultaneously; further improve casework policy and caseworker oversight; and strengthen child fatality reporting and review procedures.   A report on the status and disciplinary actions resulting from the implementation of new policies will be provided to the Board on a quarterly basis.

"This report reveals shocking procedural errors and accountability failures that have resulted in these tragedies.  Identifying those responsible, and initiating disciplinary measures will prevent future deaths," said Antonovich.
