Los Angeles woman sentenced to prison for welfare fraud

LOS ANGELES – One of two defendants accused of defrauding tax payers out of more than $300,000 in public assistance funds was sentenced to prison today, the District Attorney's Office announced.

Janice Devon Jones, 53, was sentenced to a two-year state prison term after pleading no contest to a single count of grand theft of personal property in December.

Jones and co-defendant, Lee Arthur McPhearson, 66, were among 21 people charged with welfare fraud in July 2008. Jones and McPhearson jointly bilked the State of California In Home Supportive Services program and the Los Angeles County Housing Authority out of $335,735.

McPhearson, who also pleaded no contest in December to a count of grand theft of personal property, was sentenced immediately after entering the plea to 108 days in county jail and 60 months of formal probation.
