Ridley-Thomas Statement on Board of Supervisors’ Agreement to Settle Lawsuit

Involving Hospital Death of Edith Rodriguez

Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas today issued the following statement regarding Board of Supervisors’ agreement to pay $3 million to settle a lawsuit brought by the children of Ms. Edith Rodriguez.

"Now that justice has been served, we should now focus our efforts on opening a new Martin Luther King, Jr. Hospital that provides quality health care to residents of South Los Angeles.

I trust that we all can take hope in knowing that the level of medical services throughout the County has significantly improved, and we will strive to bring exemplary services – for all patients.

The recent announcement of a framework, in which the new King Hospital would be governed by a new, independent, non-profit organization with medical care provided by University of California physicians, was a significant development -- one that we should work tirelessly to bring to fruition."
